Well China's population is about 4 times of that of the US. Their BYD brand is extremely popular and the US very much has a number of states full of petrol heads.
As a percentage of all new car sales, not by count. China is lapping us in EV adoption. If it wasn't for Google's endless pockets they'd be lapping us in autonomous driving too.
The differences in regional prices are interesting to me. From a recent article comparing BYD's offerings [1]:

The Seal costs around $30,300 in China, while a similar version currently on sale in Germany is over $48,000. Reuters found Dolphin prices outside China between 39% and 178% higher, while those for the Seal ranged between 30% and 130% higher.
Affordable EVs are here already, though access to them is not evenly distributed.
But EVs would need to drop in price quite significantly for a broader adoption.
